Diversity education in the context of islamic boarding schools in Probolinggo regency
Abstract
This study analyzes the implementation of diversity education within Indonesian pesantren as Islamic educational institutions that hold significant potential for fostering inclusive and socially just learning environments. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a multiple case study design at Pesantren Zainul Hasan Genggong and Pesantren Al-Mashduqiah, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis, and were examined using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings indicate that diversity education in pesantren manifests across three key dimensions identity recognition, equal participation, and intergroup relations yet remains insufficiently integrated into formal curricula and institutional policies. These results reveal that diversity practices in pesantren largely develop organically through cultural interaction, highlighting the need for a model of diversity education grounded in Islamic values that integrates spirituality with modern multicultural principles. The study concludes that pesantren have the potential to serve as social laboratories for cultivating diversity-oriented education but require structured curriculum design and enhanced multicultural pedagogical competencies to meet the demands of contemporary Islamic education.
